Blebbing: motility research moves in a new direction
Standfirst
The role of blebbing in motility had been long overlooked, but this changed when a study in 2006 showed that cells can exclusively use myosin-based blebbing motility to migrate directionally over long distances in order to reach their destinations.
Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology 10, 164 (2009)doi:10.1038/nrm2604

Cell migration: Cells go A-B-C
Standfirst
Two reports in Science show that ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters export lipid-modified peptides essential for directed cell migration during embryonic development.
Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology 10, 237 (2009)doi:10.1038/nrm2658

Metastasis: Oxidizing abnormalities
Standfirst
A regulator of endothelial cell morphology has been identified whose inhibition could promote tumour blood vessel normalization and inhibit metastasis.
Nature Reviews Cancer 9, 227 (2009)doi:10.1038/nrc2624

Metastasis: A malignant mutation
Standfirst
Determining the physiological relevance of integrin polymorphisms can be challenging; however, a mouse model has now been developed to investigate the effects of a tumour-associated integrin mutation in vivo.
Nature Reviews Cancer 9, 233 (2009)doi:10.1038/nrc2625
