Neuronal migration: A migratory stream in the human brain
The long-postulated existence of a rostral migratory system through which neural progenitor cells migrate from the forebrain to the olfactory bulb has now been shown for the human brain.
Original research paper: Science 315, 1243–1249 (2007)
Microscopy: Eukaryotic cell, now showing in 3D
The first high-resolution, three dimensional visualisation of a complete eukaryotic cell – revealing the precise architectural plan of a Schizosaccharomyces pombe cell – has been published.
Original research paper: Dev. Cell, 12, 349–361 (2007)
Stem cells: Epidermis - a population in question
In contrast to previous research, only one type of progenitor cell exists that divides to give two, one or no cycling daughters in proportions which maintain the epidermis without stem-cell proliferation.
Original research paper: Nature, 446, 185-189 (2007)
Repair: Inhibitory signals converge
A further key protein involved in RhoA-mediated neurite outgrowth inhibition has been discovered that could provide a more specific therapeutic target.
Original research paper: J. Neurosc., 27, 1702–1711 (2007)
